Nižné a Vyšné Wahlenbergove plesá

These two lovely tarns are situated in Furkotská dolina – Nižné Wahlenbergovo pleso (“Lower Wahlenberg´s tarn”) – 2053 m. elevation with an area 2 ha and depth 8m. Around 100 meters higher at 2157 m. elevation you can see Upper Wahlenberg´s tarn with an area of 5,17 ha and depth 21 meters. The maximum observed water temperature at the level of Vyšné Wahlenbergovo pleso is 6°C, Nižné Wahlenbergovo pleso 8°C.

The name Wahlenbergove plesá was introduced in the scientific and tourist literature at the end of the 19th century. The Committee of the Hungarian Carpathian Association thus honored the memory of the Swedish doctor and botanist, professor at Uppsala University and traveler Göran Wahlenberg (1780-1851), who in 1813 explored the Tatra vegetation and published a classic botanical work Flora Carpatorum Principalium (Flora of the Central Carpathians). The names Vyšné Wahlenbergovo pleso and Nižné Wahlenbergovo pleso are random. Wahlenberg never visited them up-close, although he walked and botanized relatively close while climbing the peak Kriváň.

The easiest way to get there is to use chairlift from Štrbské Pleso to Chata pod Soliskom. After that follow a blue marked trail 0:15 h to a junction called Rázcestie pod Soliskom and additional 1:20h up until you get to the upper tarn. Other possibility is from Štrbské Pleso 0:40 h to a junction Rázcestie pod Furkotskou dolinou. Then continue 2,20 h in the direction of Bystrá lávka. The most beautiful views are from the saddleback Bystrá lávka – starting point in Štrbské Pleso around 3:40h via Mlynická dolina.
